HFB Otter Trail 2020

Join us on a 7 day bucket-list worthy adventure in the Garden route. The mother of all South African hikes, the Otter Trail!

The trail is regarded as one of the best internationally and stretches from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley. The trail is approx. 45km and takes 5 days to complete. The 4 nights are spent in comfortable huts with breath-taking views.


Date: 5-11 May 2020

Difficulty rating: 7/10: The Otter might not be as demanding as some other longer trails, but it should not be underestimated. It has some steep climbs and descents, as well as technical river crossings.



Day 1 (5 May)

14:00 – Meet up at Storms River Mouth Rest Camp

Accommodation type: Forest Huts (2 sleeper) Food and drinks supplied by #HikingForBeer

Day 2 – 6 (6-10 May)

08:00 – 09:00 Breakfast – supplied by #HikingForBeer 10:00 – Otter Trail start (Transport from the Rest Camp to Trail start included) Facilities on the trail: There are two huts that sleep 6-people. The huts are equipped with bunk beds and mattresses. There’s a toilet (often with a scenic view), a braai area with firewood, a cold shower, a water tap and a bag/bin to dispose of rubbish.

  • Trail Day 1: 4.8 kilometres
  • Trail Day 2: 7.9 kilometres
  • Trail Day 3: 7.7 kilometres
  • Trail Day 4: 13.8 kilometres
  • Trail Day 5: 6.8 kilometres

Day 6 (10 May)

At the end of day 6 (the final day of the Otter Trail) we’ll walk to the Nature’s Valley restaurant where the binge eating will commence. The first round is on us, you’ve earned it!

From here you will be transported to the Nature’s Valley Rest Camp, accommodation will be in Forest Huts and yes, there’s hot water, electricity and comfortable beds. We’ll end off with a braai – Food and drinks supplied by #HikingForBeer

Day 7 (11 May)

10:00 Check Out

We will say our goodbyes and start planning the next big hike.



Cost: R 4,950.00* per person. (50% deposit secures your entry, balance to be paid by 6 March 2020)


  • Pre hike Accommodation in 2-sleeper Forest huts at SANPark’s Storms river Mouth Rest camp. Including dinner & drinks.
  • Pre hike breakfast.
  • Transport from the rest camp to the start of the hike.
  • Entry to the famous Otter Trail.
  • Post hike beers at the infamous Nature’s Valley Restaurant where the Otter memorabilia tree can be found.
  • Transport from the Nature’s Valley Restaurant to the rest camp.
  • Forrest hut accommodation at the Nature’s Valley rest camp.
  • Dinner & drinks at the rest camp.
